15. Biodiversity And Conservation 

1. What do you mean by conservation of Biodiversity? What are its objectives?

Ans.- Conservation of Biodiversity : Conservation means biodiversity that leads to protection, uplift and scientific management of biodiversity so as to maintain it at its optimum level and derive sustainable benefits for the present as well as future generations.

→ Objectives of the Conservation : 

Biodiversity has following aims :

(i) Balance maintainence between vital ecological process and life saving system (air, water, soil)

(ii) Biodiversity is fundamental to ecosystem services of nature, diverse gene pool of all living organism.

(iii) All the threatened species must be conserved. There should be many decisions, that doesn’t reduce the degree and amount of Biodiversity.

2. What do you understand by the term endangered species? Name three categories of endangered species and name to at least two animal species of India which are in danger of extinction.

Ans.- Endangered Species : Those species are facing a high risk of extinction in the wild in the near future due to decrease in its habitat, excessive predation or poaching. Some examples are Asiatic wild Ass, Blue Whale, Great Indian Bustard etc.

3. Write short notes on following-

(a) Red data book  (b) Reserved areas in India

Ans. (a) Red Data Book is a del catalogue of taxa that are facing the risk of extinction. Its main aim is to give information about the urgency and scale of conservation problem to the public and policy makers.

Users : (i) Developing awareness about the importance of threatened biodiversity. 

(ii) Identification and documentation of endangered species.

(iii) Providing a global index of the decline of biodiversity.

(b) Reserved areas in India: In India, there are 33 Botanical Gardens, 99 National parks, 515 Wildlife sanctuaries and 17 Biosphere reserves are there. Eg.- Pachmahri Biosphere reserve, Jim Corbett National Park, Kanjiranga National Park etc.
